Intramedullary spinal cord tumors

چکیده
Comparison of the incidence of the various types of spinal tumors in infancy and childhood to other age groups reveals significant differences, similar to the brain tumors. Compared with intramedullary tumors in adult patients (16%), the incidence of intramedul1ary bIastomas is higher in children and young adults (1-16 years) (25%). Intramedullary tumors become prevalently manifest as gliomas (about 80%), i.e. neoplasms ofthe neuroglial tissue of the spinal cord. Among the glioma subspecies, astrocytomas playa major part, almost paral1eled by ependymomas in terms of incidence. Malignant types such as glioblastomas are rarely seen. Moreover, a large number of neuroepithelial tumors are referred to as «gliomas» in the literature, though without any precise histologic c1assification. The majority of these blastomas are fibrillary astrocytomas and ependymomas. In addition to the described intramedul1ary tumors there are a number of other intramedul1ary neoplasms ofmesodermal and ectodermal origino These prevalently inc1ude congenital and embryonic tumors and angioblastomas (about 12 %), and isolated instances of neoplasms such as sarcomas. The remaining intramedul1ary processes comprise around 8 % of al1 intramedul1ary tumors and inc1ude abscesses, granulomas, vascular malformations, cysts, etc.

متن کاملPreoperative diagnosis of intramedullary spinal schwannomas.
Intramedullary spinal schwannomas are rare benign spinal cord tumors and are easily misdiagnosed because of the imaging characteristics shared with intramedullary glioma. Correct preoperative definitive diagnosis is essential for treatment and prognosis. To improve the preoperative diagnostic strategy, clinical and imaging data of seven patients with intramedullary spinal schwannoma (6 men, mea...

Background & Importance: Acute autonomic system impairment can be dangerous and life-threatening, and a clinician should be aware of its occurrence possibility. According to the anatomy of this system, spinal cord lesions could disturb its function. There are many reports of autonomic dysreflexia in spinal cord i njuries especially spinal cord trauma. Case Presentation: A 28 year-o...
متن کاملPET findings of intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord using [18F] FDG and [11C] methionine.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Only a few reports on intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord using PET have been published. We report findings of PET by using [(18)F] fluorodeoxyglucose and [(11)C] methionine and discuss the usefulness of the findings in patients with intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord. MATERIALS AND METHODS PET/CT was performed in 9 patients with intramedullary tumors of the ...
متن کاملClear Cell Ependymoma of Spinal Cord: A Case Report
Clear cell variant of ependymoma is almost exclusively located in the supratentorial region. Only few cases of this tumor that located in the spinal cord have been reported. Here we report one case of intramedullary clear cell ependymoma of the lumbar spinal cord. In microscopic examination, the tumor cells were round to oval with moderate amounts of clear cytoplasm and centrally located lar...
